Bridleway creates controversy
The plan to allow horses on to a scenic route in Colne is said to be creating dissent among the area's ramblers and hikers.

The Lancashire Telegraph has reported that a £180,000 proposal to extend a public path enough to create a bridleway and cycle path has been met with mixed reactions from the public.

Although the proposal was rejected in 2006, councillors have granted it a second try this year.

Christine Harrison of the Ramblers Association reportedly said at the Colne and District Committee meeting discussing the proposal that the area was a pleasant and safe place for families and children - but allowing bike riders and horse riders there would compromise both horse care and public safety.

But equine enthusiast Claire Shevelen told the group that horse riders and disabled people needed better access to public paths than the main roads nearby.

Horse care on the roads has been in the news recently as it was reported that a main road in Surrey has installed a pegasus crossing, allowing horses and their riders to cross safely.
