New surgeon at horse care facility
A "renowned" equine surgeon has taken up the reins in a horse care facility in Merseyside.

The Chester Chronicle reports that Neil Townsend, who specialises in equine soft tissue surgery, is enjoying his new post in the Philip Levelhulme Equine Hospital, Neston.

Dr Townsend told the paper that he had been a horse lover since he was young and knew that veterinary medicine was the career for him.

He added that he performed anything from two to four operations at the hospital a day - but said that the possibility of breaking bad news to riders daunted him.

"The best part of the job is knowing you are making a difference. The worst is knowing you can't save every horse," he concluded.

Horse care facilities around the country are struggling somewhat under the load of displaced horses, it has been reported recently.

The bad weather, coupled with the poor economy, has left high numbers of stray horses wandering.
